00:00:02.000 –> 00:00:06.000
Saving himself and becoming a disciple of Osho

00:00:06.492 –> 00:00:10.512
‚I found something that gave me purpose in life.‘

00:00:10.762 –> 00:00:16.503
‚Instead of brining my brother, I came back with red clothes and wearing a picture of the Indian guru.‘

00:00:20.170 –> 00:00:31.317
This is about … Maybe I’m jumping a little bit ahead here but ’76, ’79, that area,

00:00:32.258 –> 00:00:37.037
I have a note here: in ’79, the People’s Republic of China

00:00:37.362 –> 00:00:42.850
became internationally recognized for the first time, at the cost of Taiwan.

00:00:42.983 –> 00:00:49.000
The Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Iran. The Russians invaded Afghanistan.

00:00:49.883 –> 00:00:52.129
Rhodesia became Zimbabwe.

00:00:52.396 –> 00:00:57.531
And the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, I hope I have pronounced that correctly,

00:00:57.531 –> 00:01:04.800
later known as Osho, and his followers are in the mainstream media all over the world.

00:01:05.000 –> 00:01:14.061
Free sex, drugs, a cult? Question mark? Parents were in fear over their daughters and sons,

00:01:14.253 –> 00:01:21.000
and in front of that background you went on a mission to Poona.

00:01:21.408 –> 00:01:24.633
Have I jumped a little bit too quickly to that question?

00:01:24.633 –> 00:01:32.764
We’re good. So, I’m at the farm in Krefeld doing my apprenticeship.

00:01:33.014 –> 00:01:40.745
At that time, my brother left Germany on the hippie trail,

00:01:41.879 –> 00:01:48.000
partly with a magic bus that went from London and Amsterdam to Kathmandu,

00:01:48.000 –> 00:01:51.858
overland and somewhere in Turkey he got off.

00:01:52.808 –> 00:01:59.685
He spent some time in Greece and in Turkey. Then he went overland from Turkey through Iran.

00:01:59.685 –> 00:02:05.042
This was just before the Russians invaded Afghanistan.

00:02:05.042 –> 00:02:11.433
He made it through Afghanistan and somehow he ended up in Poona

00:02:11.800 –> 00:02:17.900
with the notorious Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh.

00:02:18.475 –> 00:02:28.163
And then the first TV documentary appeared, people screaming and being completely crazy.

00:02:28.513 –> 00:02:30.692
I would give you one example.

00:02:30.958 –> 00:02:42.642
One of my later mentors, he was actually the tax commissioner of Poona, it’s a very high position, but he was also a healer.

00:02:43.292 –> 00:02:52.778
He was standing in the middle of the meditation room on a big table, like this, and then everybody who had a cold

00:02:53.078 –> 00:03:00.592
was to run around in a clockwise movement, and he would be standing on a table going ….

00:03:00.592 –> 00:03:05.517
(Arjava makes strange noises and grimaces. René chuckles.)

00:03:05.800 –> 00:03:09.971
Like that. And everybody running around. A few hundred people.

00:03:09.971 –> 00:03:16.950
And they were playing the most outlandish music you could ever imagine, straight from hell.

00:03:17.167 –> 00:03:23.063
And they showed this in Germany on television: this is what’s happening there.

00:03:23.363 –> 00:03:30.175
And we’re watching and we’re thinking, ‚Oh my God, now the boy has gone completely crazy!‘

00:03:30.175 –> 00:03:30.933
Poor Martin!

00:03:30.933 –> 00:03:41.787
Poor Martin, now he has lost the plot completely. He was alwas eccentric and always a worry for my parents,

00:03:41.787 –> 00:03:48.642
because nobody could control him. And now he was in this insane cult.

00:03:48.783 –> 00:03:53.392
He was the first born, or was your sister the first born?

00:03:53.392 –> 00:03:54.708
No, he was the second.

00:03:54.708 –> 00:03:55.867
He was the second.

00:03:56.483 –> 00:04:00.042
She was born in 1956, he was in 1957.

00:04:01.000 –> 00:04:08.130
So now he’s there, then we get another letter. At the time no internet, no WhatsApp.

00:04:08.238 –> 00:04:16.117
Phones were not really working in India at the time. The letters always took a few months, like relay.

00:04:17.000 –> 00:04:26.617
And we got another letter from Colombo, he said, ‚Oh, no, I left the place, it was too much. I’m in Sri Lanka now.‘

00:04:26.892 –> 00:04:30.363
And then I don’t know, two months later, we get another letter,

00:04:30.363 –> 00:04:37.000
‚Oh, I’m here again, and I’m working as a night guard in the Osho ashram.‘

00:04:37.083 –> 00:04:42.191
And we would go, ‚Oh no, what are we going to do?‘

00:04:44.599 –> 00:04:52.158
So we decided, my parents and me, that I would go and take a look if he is okay.

00:04:52.683 –> 00:04:54.000
You’re 19 now?

00:04:54.000 –> 00:04:55.000
I’m 18.

00:04:56.000 –> 00:04:58.233
I’m still doing the farming apprenticeship.

00:04:58.525 –> 00:05:03.000
To look if he’s okay, and if he’s okay … okay, good.

00:05:03.000 –> 00:05:06.317
If he has found a place … My parents were amazing!

00:05:06.667 –> 00:05:11.825
They’re like, ‚if he finds a place where he is happy, we’re good.‘

00:05:12.000 –> 00:05:15.000
One worry less.

00:05:15.375 –> 00:05:21.134
And if he’s not okay, see if you keep persuade him to come back.

00:05:21.134 –> 00:05:26.000
Then my parents were in the Protestant church, very involved.

00:05:26.000 –> 00:05:37.292
They started talk to some people in Poona from the church, and what to do, and what they could do.

00:05:38.000 –> 00:05:46.703
So I went in my spring vacation to Poona.

00:05:46.703 –> 00:05:54.308
I still remember entering the gate. They had this beautiful wooden, massive wooden gate.

00:05:56.000 –> 00:06:04.325
It opened up, when you walk in there, it was like ‚boom‘, you entered like a time-warp space.

00:06:04.325 –> 00:06:08.121
I can’t explain it. It was magical really.

00:06:08.296 –> 00:06:13.733
I took one look around and I thought, I never wanted to leave from here ever again.

00:06:14.000 –> 00:06:16.479
Magnetic to the max.

00:06:17.495 –> 00:06:18.591
I was looking at …

00:06:18.716 –> 00:06:23.050
There were so many people, there were maybe 3000 people there at the time,

00:06:23.133 –> 00:06:29.336
working at the ashram, doing psychotherapy groups, doing meditations, meditation camps.

00:06:30.778 –> 00:06:43.250
Any kind of new age … Anything that you could possibly think of you could receive treatments or sessions there, or learn it from really good people.

00:06:44.425 –> 00:06:52.626
So I looked around at the people at the ashram, and I thought, they really reminded me of those Zen kind of characters,

00:06:52.626 –> 00:06:57.000
I thought, ‚I found my place, that’s it, I want to stay here.‘

00:06:58.100 –> 00:07:02.683
So instead of saving my brother, I saved myself.

00:07:03.875 –> 00:07:13.000
What an irony, you know, there he goes to save his brother in Poona and ends up staying there. I found that very amusing.

00:07:13.000 –> 00:07:18.158
Then I came back to Germany, because it was my Easter vacation.

00:07:20.000 –> 00:07:21.698
And …

00:07:23.865 –> 00:07:26.042
How long did you stay in Poona at that time?

00:07:26.042 –> 00:07:27.208
Three weeks.

00:07:27.208 –> 00:07:32.000
Only three weeks, so no encounter groups, no … ?

00:07:32.267 –> 00:07:42.258
No, I did something that was called ‚intensive enlightenment‘, or ‚enlightenment intensive‘, either one.

00:07:43.000 –> 00:07:46.390
Okay, I will explain it a little bit.

00:07:47.340 –> 00:07:52.750
We were maybe 70 people in a group, in a big …

00:07:53.825 –> 00:08:02.077
On the top of a building with some shade over it, like a bamboo tent over it, and then the group leader was saying:

00:08:02.777 –> 00:08:17.067
‚Pick a partner. You’re going to keep eye contact for five minutes, and then one of the partners says, ‚tell me who you are!‘ Then the other would answer.

00:08:18.000 –> 00:08:30.233
You have to keep talking. … If the one who’s supposed to talk doesn’t talk, then the listener gets my attention and I come and I’ll help.‘

00:08:30.825 –> 00:08:39.977
So, ting! Okay, tell me who you are. ‚Okay, I’m Frank, I’m German. I’m from Dusseldorf,

00:08:40.410 –> 00:08:51.000
I have a brother and a sister, I have a dog, I do the farming thing, I went to high school, I like football …‘

00:08:51.000 –> 00:09:04.167
Okay, so after three, five minute sessions like that, you’re starting to think, everything I say is complete nonsense.

00:09:04.467 –> 00:09:09.300
It doesn’t describe me at all, it’s just the periphery.

00:09:09.733 –> 00:09:19.217
Now, this went on about 12 to 15 hours per day! For three days.

00:09:21.433 –> 00:09:27.635
Intensive enlightenment! So very soon you got to the point that everything that you think you are,

00:09:28.160 –> 00:09:33.000
is just dictated from the outside, from your culture, from your parents, from your society,

00:09:33.000 –> 00:09:40.825
from your religion, from the food you eat, from the mountains you see … everything.

00:09:41.383 –> 00:09:47.699
And what is really you? So this thing really pushed you into this …

00:09:48.324 –> 00:09:57.062
into this space that is you, that you can perceive very much but you cannot say anything about.

00:09:58.379 –> 00:10:02.033
Incredible! One of the most incredible experiences.

00:10:02.617 –> 00:10:09.468
There was one Japanese boy, clean-shaven. Maybe he was a monk or ex-monk.

00:10:09.951 –> 00:10:15.687
He was sitting there the first day, I was thinking, oh my god, this guy must be enlightened.

00:10:16.120 –> 00:10:19.010
So relaxed, so calm and quiet.

00:10:19.010 –> 00:10:25.000
And the second day they needed five people to keep him down. He freaked out.

00:10:26.000 –> 00:10:30.000
All the repression, it was just … boom!

00:10:30.142 –> 00:10:37.658
So that was very intense. And then I did meditations every day, three, four hours of meditations.

00:10:38.300 –> 00:10:40.000
And then I went back home.

00:10:40.000 –> 00:10:45.000
So, after these three weeks, you went back home to Germany?

00:10:45.000 –> 00:10:49.646
I went back home to Germany, but before … I go back.

00:10:51.821 –> 00:10:59.000
I became his … Osho’s student, Bhagwan’s disciple at the time at the time.

00:11:00.550 –> 00:11:16.478
He called it Rajneesh Neo-Sannyas. ‚Sannyasin‘ is a recluse in India, somebody who is on the path of enlightenment to leave society behind and

00:11:17.786 –> 00:11:23.825
for finding out who he is and then to share that with others.

00:11:25.475 –> 00:11:34.130
At the time, there weren’t that many people there, you could still talk to Bhagwan and he …

00:11:34.755 –> 00:11:44.454
When I left, he said to me, ‚So how are you? What have you done?‘ I said, ‚Oh, I’ve done intensive enlightenment and some other

00:11:44.595 –> 00:11:53.392
groups similar to that, with some bio-energetics and things.‘ He said, ‚Good. When are you coming back?‘

00:11:54.150 –> 00:12:10.250
And I’m thinking, ‚Okay, another year of the farming apprenticeship, then six months of army service or, if I refuse, one and a half years of social work.‘

00:12:11.000 –> 00:12:18.324
No, it was nine months … of army and one and a half … or something like that, or what, I don’t remember,

00:12:18.991 –> 00:12:27.541
… one year, two and a half … six months to make money … three years. Now, I’m eighteen years old, and I am asked, when are you coming back?

00:12:27.541 –> 00:12:31.258
I can’t say in three years, three years is eternity.

00:12:32.192 –> 00:12:43.475
So, I’m looking at him, I go, ‚I don’t know‘ and he starts to smile and he says, ‚Don’t worry, I’m back at the right time.‘

00:12:45.000 –> 00:12:51.000
Okay, so I left. Then I went back to Germany.

00:12:51.000 –> 00:12:57.000
At this moment, you already had your Sannyasin name ‚Arjava‘ which is…

00:12:57.000 –> 00:13:05.000
No, Frank, he kept my name first. Frank, and then a few years later, I asked him to change it.

00:13:05.000 –> 00:13:07.733
Okay, sorry for jumping the gun.

00:13:08.000 –> 00:13:19.000
He seemed to know something that I didn’t know. I was a little bit suspicious, what did he mean, that you come back at the right time.

00:13:19.492 –> 00:13:25.633
Again, one of those Zen type of answers, which intrigued me, which I liked.

00:13:26.000 –> 00:13:36.000
I went back. Instead of bringing my brother, I come back in red clothes with the wearing a picture of the Indian guru,

00:13:36.175 –> 00:13:48.000
My parents were like, ‚Oh!‘ My father didn’t talk to me for days. They thought, ‚Okay now the second son has gone bananas, brainwashed and …‘.

00:13:48.000 –> 00:13:59.000
But then, of course, with time, they realized that there was no brainwash, that I was actually content, I found also something that I really liked,

00:13:59.000 –> 00:14:11.420
something that gave me significance, it gave me significance in life, a purpose, thinking, ‚Buoah! I really want to go more into diving into myself.‘

00:14:11.420 –> 00:14:17.727
Very much like the situation I’m in now again, where I just really want to see

00:14:18.427 –> 00:14:25.663
who am I? And what is my purpose, and what is it that I really want to do?

00:14:27.222 –> 00:14:28.475
Nice!

00:14:29.000 –> 00:14:31.542
Rebirth? If it is not the wrong expression?

00:14:31.542 –> 00:14:40.442
No, it’s not wrong. Don’t … take it too … spiritually.

00:14:40.725 –> 00:14:44.892
I like actually your resetting analogy, it is quite a nice one.

00:14:44.892 –> 00:14:46.142
It’s nice. (Clicking noise).

One comment on “Saving Himself and Becoming a Disciple of Osho

  1. René Vögtli

General: Everything around Osho and the commune (Ashram) is an eye catcher. Osho was of major influence on Arjava. And the comical story of him going to ’save‘ his brother and then staying on himself is highly entertaining.
